Apple will introduce a new version of the Touch with a higher-resolution screen — similar to the display featured on the iPhone 4 — and a $99 version of its three-year-old Apple TV set-top box, one person said. The new Apple TV, which will have a smaller hard drive than the earlier version, is aimed at letting people stream content from iTunes, the person said.”

iPod Touch rebate ends on Sept 7. I think it will be a week later, according to another rumor.

My own potential speculation about that Media Event is this : FaceTime
1) iPodTouch with front camera of course, and gyposcope
2) iTV WITH FRONT CAMERA using a
3) iChat compatible with FaceTime (per nolavabo’s smart remark)
4) A more stretched speculation is a Deluxe Model of a 9.7′ iPad :
- WITH FRONT CAMERA
- With Retina technology
- With an A5 processor
It is my belief that Apple wants to launch new products aimed at increasing the value of the iP4′s as Android is now a credible competitor to iPhones. FaceTime is a key differenciator in SmartPhones. Remember that iPhones is nearing 70% of AAPL’s profits mix… Apple will do everything possible to increase the added value of iPhones either directly or indirectly… As Apple distanced itself by creating the AppStore it needs another driver, and I believe that this is FACETIME
iTV is not IMHO primed for TV times on a large scale, but a more REFINED hobby for Apple… it is one more product in the iOS platform racing to reach a 150 Millions devices… It may be primed for Games on a large screen for mobile game players who would be tempted by the new iPodTouch, or who would be buying an iP 4 …
That is my take on the forthcoming media event…

I don’t believe the upper end iPad will turn real, maybe some 6-7″ variant at most; there is no competition, they barely make enough of them; when the time will be right, they will offer all those at the same price – as they do with all other products

I agree with Nicu. I think the event is to seize upon the sales potential and significance of the day after Labour day, it being the first day of school and the end of summer. It’s a big day to reap since many universities also have an official on campus Apple reseller. The 7th is the first day of 3 days a year when college kids are loaded. lol.

Cisco has already announced a Tablet with a Face-Front camera addressed to the business market segment…
I think a “regular” iPad e/w is a minor tweek … Initially a cam on the iPad made no big sense… FaceTime might got added possibly as an “after-thought” on iP4′s … Maybe FaceTime is turning out to be a killer app, adding some punch to retina technology…
Some Android makers are positioning themselves to launching zeepier and greater autonomy tablet devices using 1.5 GHz dual-processor (Saragon) … This is what makes me think that an upper De Luxe model is in the making with an A5 aimed at professionals… Implementing Retina Technology is the far stretched part of my speculation, the other is announcing it it in September and to be made available in December as it might hurt sales of existing “regular” iPads … But pricing it in the $1,000 – $1,500 range may take care of that problem…
The main thing is the emphasis on FaceTime for the sake of giving more punch to the iP4′s AAPL’s bread and butter … Until mid 2011 as iPad’s carries a bigger weight in AAPL’s profit mix
