This IPO seems like a bad bet. Perhaps they will follow Google and Amazon and create a hardware offering. Smart companies stick to their core competency.
“We currently do not show ads or directly generate any meaningful revenue from users accessing Facebook through our mobile products, but we believe that we may have potential future monetization opportunities such as the inclusion of sponsored stories in users’ mobile News Feeds.”

I think with that much traffic they’ll find a way.

Disagree, it’s all about advertising. There’s some money in news and games, but that’s dwarfed by ads. Since mobile uses apps and not the browser, it’s a bad bet.

There’s something very US about FaceBook and social networks in general. I’ve tried FaceBook and simply was unwilling to expose my life the way some do. The few acquaintances I have in other parts of the world seem much more unwilling to live a life through the internet. They all seem to value their privacy much more than we do and rightfully so. Much like Amazon but for completely different reasons these offerings are not likely to be global.

The US has been very successful in foisting their culture on the rest of the world. Just returned from vacation in Hawaii and witnessed Asians in skinny jeans with iPods playing the latest rap, but in every other way they were very much in tune with their cultural heritage. It’s difficult for me to believe that allows for a substantial participation in FaceBook.

Facebook is the AOL of this decade. Hype greater than value, reproducible, disruptable, replaceable, and an annoying and intrusive obstacle and toll gate (disguised as a free and enabling portal) which is needlessly placed between users and their goals. Will it be more like Google, AOL, or Groupon [worthless] ? I say AOL.
