“Product naming: The name for the original iPhone made sense — a phone + iPod, from Apple = iPhone. The iPhone 3G was a good extension; while 3G is more of a technical term, it is common enough parlance for consumers to understand the difference from the original iPhone. The addition of 3G described the main feature and benefit of the new model — speed. However, if the difference between the original iPhone and the iPhone 3G was speed, then the difference between the iPhone 3G and the iPhone 3G S is… more speed? Apple is unfortunately slipping away from their traditionally consumer-friendly naming scheme (e.g. MacBook vs. MacBook Pro) into the all-too-common tech-centric model numbers (e.g. TPS-8675309X). The lack of a clear differentiated name also will make it more confusing when the next version of the iPhone is released, and consumers have to differentiate between the different models when comparing versions, buying accessories, or seeking support. Apple unfortunately ran into this problem as well with the iPod, with new versions being unofficially being referred to as “generations” (e.g. “third-generation” iPod). This is not unlike the automobile industry, where a model name stays the same from year-to-year; however, unlike a car, Apple has been rather sly about naming each subsequent version and the differences between each “model year” are much less significant than the differences in an automobile from year to year. Since subsequent iPod models look physically similar, and since the software differences are not obvious at first glance, it takes some sleuthing to identify the type of iPod and whether a desired accessory is compatible. This has less of an impact on other Apple products like the iPod Mini, iPod Nano, and the various versions of the iPod Shuffle, since the visual differences between models is more obvious.”

So they should name it the Galaxy II? What’s unclear about 4S? “Same phone you love, just much improved…” The S is utterly meaningless. It’s a subtle differentiation for the consumer that wants a clutterless answer. I trust the guys that gave us the mouse, the windows, the tablet, the Unix GUI, and the smartphone to know how to name a new product.

Go to eBay and search for Macintosh Performa. Read through the list of names and tell me how each model is different. They’ve done differentiated naming and it turned into a shit show.

No they did not give us these things. I was a software engineer at PARC and my Altos had it all. Why am I an Apple fan boy? Apple made all of it viable!

PARC had ideas. They even had working prototypes. But they didn’t give us anything.
Apple took those ideas, improved greatly on them, and then actually made products.
I have total respect for the people and research done as Xerox PARC, but they weren’t exactly entrepreneurial.

My point is that Apple has followed this path and before and it didn’t quite work.

I may have gone over the top with praise for them, but I’m trying to say that they have a better understanding of what they’re up to than I do.

My other point is that people love to criticize Apple’s actions when they aren’t looking at the distant horizon. The iPhone didn’t need a new case (leaving aside arguments about the suitability of glass), so they didn’t change it. For Apple, this is an engineering improvement that says, “we took another whack at it, and look at what we have…”.

It fits their pattern perfectly. Release a new device or OS revision, deliver a strong improvement on it. Move on to next ground-breaking device/OS revision. Look at this from an investor’s perspective, they have exceeded their competition in quality, speed, and capabilities and are doing it with parts that are already in production. Higher margins, continuity of manufacturing is maintained, profits continue to flow. All the while, they’re dumping human effort, that was saved from the 4S revision, into the 5 release. Look at how much money RIMM, HP, and Samsung are burning through playing catch up while Apple is the pacesetter. It’s smart utilization of human and manufacturing opportunities.

Other brands talk a big game, but in reality they play each release cycle as a race, Apple sees each of these cycles as a stage in a much larger race.

Consumers will assume the S means speed, so that after a year and a half Apple has only released a speed bump. Their reaction will be “I’ll just wait for the iPhone 5!”

People on this board don’t seem to realize how ignorant the normal consumer really is. That’s why advertising works, and boy is Apple going to have to up their ad budget big time to overcome all of the bad press.

Don’t forget about the terrible naming of the iPad (is it a sanitary napkin!?)
We all know how badly that naming travesty turned out!

I predict that before January, before the Christmas sales numbers come to light, when we see there are still no iPhone killers, nobody will remember this horrible “iPhone 4S” naming travesty.

rastard 12:44 am on October 6, 2011 123 days ago

        @birra:

Been giving some thought to your assertion that “iPhone 4S” is a name-fail.

You’re right — the “normal consumer” is extremely ignorant in their buying decisions. Based on nothing other than name alone, I would expect fewer people to buy an iPhone4S than would if the exact same device were called the iPhone5 (this seems somewhat indisputable, as the polls you cited already show). I think this is particularly true of current iPhone owners, many of whom will now hold off on upgrading until the IPhone5 comes out.

That said, I also suspect that if this new phone had been named the iPhone5, there would be complaints — likely generated from the blogosphere — that Apple inflated the name and that the advances in this model weren’t really worthy of a full-generation change in the product name. So in some manner, Apple would take a hit regardless of what they did in naming.

I actually think the key problem isn’t the name, but that the new phone is visibly no different than the iPhone4. True, there have been substantial improvements in the guts, but those aren’t outwardly apparent. Let’s face it — while product quality and overall experience are key considerations for many people who decide to buy Apple products, there are just as many people (if not more) who buy for no other reason than Apple’s status and “cool factor”. The last line of this article sums up well where this 4S will come up a but short compared to what a 5 could have been: http://www.cnn.com/2011/10/05/tech/mobile/iphone-4s-dud/

This has all gotten ridiculous! Same form factor as the 4, thus iPhone 4s. It’s not like it would have been any different with a different case and iPhone 5 stamped on it. It’s a major improvement over the iP4. Camera, major improvement, A5 – 7x graphics, 2x chip speed, more memory available, world phone. I do think it was time to add another size to the lineup. But, remember antennagate? If that didn’t hurt IP4 sales, I think not stamping “iPhone 5″ on the case isn’t going to do much.

    • nolavabo

nolavabo 12:47 am on October 6, 2011 123 days ago

Everybody with an iPhone do this. Remove the case (if any) and read the name on the back. I don’t care which one you own, it’ll only say “iPhone”.

Same goes for the iPad; 1 or 2 it only says “iPad” on the back.

Average consumers are more ignorant than any tech geeks would credit. They don’t know, and don’t care, which model phone they buy, which gen it is, how much RAM it has, blah blah blah. They have no idea if they own the 3G or the 3GS, and they won’t have any idea if they own the 4 or the 4S. If you know which iPhone you own, you are a geek. I know plenty of people who use computers all day at work and facebook at night, who own iPhones and use them regularly, yet if you ask which one they own the reply is “the iPhone with the white plastic curvy back” or “the glass one that does video calls”. Soon it’ll be “the one with/out Siri”. Every Android user knows the model name of the phone they own, and can normally recite the tech specs to me as well.

I agree with this mix of opinions , BUT … What everyone forgets is the “LEADER” aspect ! … People will follow a LEADER !… The “Leader” will know the added value of the 4S and if he adopts it, the other will …

That was the case with computers, and it is the same with SmartPhones ! … Especially nowadays as there is a greater variety of choices , and they do get more complex…

The iOS bodes well with non-Geeks as as well as the more Techie type , because it simply WORKS ! … and Clod will make ALL iPhones 3gs, 4, and 4 gs SIMPLE to synch, to airplay, to etc…

The 4S will prove to be an even a BIGGER success than the 4 ! …

It remains to be seen if the 1st week-end sales will be in the 3M range …
The good thing is that there is now ONE MORE CHOICE : The 4S … the 4, the 3gs … with the latter two bearing a lower price … as low as $0 ! (with a 2 year contract)

The most popular smartphone in the world just doubled it’s processor, download speed, graphics; it has a camera that is competitive with point-and-shoot cameras and greatly improves the most popular camera on Flickr; implements a well thought out and secure cloud; and once again provides integrated services that are unmatched in the industry. If you don’t get that, I can’t help you.

If nervous investors don’t get it, you have a buying opportunity.

To say that this is reflective of Tim Cook’s leadership is foolish and ignorant. This phone has been in the can for 8 months. Steve is still around and still has a hand on things. If he thought this was a weak showing he would have said something. Tim cook is why Apple controls the entire industry’s supply chain. Steve Jobs is why they lead it.

Do some research, learn about Apple, and swallow hard. Taking risks is how you make money. These guys research, plan, develop, an execute. This isn’t Enron.

As far as everyone being disappointed. With Apple moving launch from June/July to October, I think people were expecting a lot more. The problem is they got a lot more, they just don’t know it. Apple could have changed the exterior and people would have went crazy. I do think it’s time that Apple added a different size to the lineup. I was hoping for a 4 inch screen. I don’t know how much of a problem it would be for the devs though. conshmillo 4:23 am on October 5, 2011 124 days ago

I am utterly unimpressed after watching it. And it makes me wonder if Apple is already showing signs of Steve Jobs’ absence.
      - To start with, marketing wise, if about 65 million people out there are expecting iPhone 5 for months, delaying their purchase , why to give them iPhone 4S? It’s like waiting for the whole pizza and getting just slice. Just call it iPhone 5, and if you have something better in works, call that one iPhone 5S or iPhone triple X, or whatever.
      - Presentation was too slow and too boring. Squirrel and Mickey Mouse? Really? Cards? Maybe we can take it from Steve, but anyone else sounds just too boring, uneventful. For me only important and only interesting part was about iOS5 and cloud services.
      - As for Siri, it was alright but you could download app with it a year ago, so what’s the big deal. It felt more like a filler than something incredibly new. And Forstall even said it’s beta and he doesn’t want to do live demo. And that female voice quality sucked, I remember years ago testing some Scottish company text-to-speech software and it sounded better back then. I think ATT bought them. Can’t remember the name.
My personal feeling is, they should all skip it and rather wait till they have iPhone 5 ready.

Also the Siri App that was out a year ago — it wasn’t anything like this. Apple has greatly improved it and it’s also been integrated into all the native features of the phone. This is making a huge change in how people can interact with their mobile computers/phones.
Frankly this is starting to approximate the computer on Star Trek.

What if the iPhone 5 is meant for initial exclusive contracts with firm orders in 2011/2012 for customers such as :

    1) Sprint / AT&T ?
    2) China Telecom
    3) Other 4G non LTE carriers in the world…

Could this wait for exclusive deals be behind the delays associated with the iPhone 5 launch ?
This may also imply a a delayed launch of iPhone 5 …

    So we may see :

    A) iPhone 4S : Available as of the 6th of October 2011
    B) iPhone 5 Late October- Late November ?
    C) iPhone 4 to fill the former market niche of iP3GS
    D) iPhone 4, 8 GB The “affordable” Pre-Pay , and 3GS to become a wanna be “nanoPhone” ?

The same thing as 3Gs, everybody was freaking out. One quarter later the sales were stratospheric. They give it a new number when there is a new design, it’s that simple. The same deception as with iPad 2, which is more or less iPad 1 (no screen resolution increase, just a bit thinner and faster).

One of the important facts is what will they charge for the 3Gs without a contract now. If it is $350 or lower, prepare for 40+M iPhones sold this quarter (albeit with a lower ASP), mainly to pre-pay markets.

        Birra,

INITIALLY I did not expect the iPhone 5 to be released in the June-October 2011 time frame !
But as rumors of the 4″ screen surfaced, I started hoping that there would be 2 news phones announced at yesterday event especially after the news of the 20B + deal with Sprint …

The iPhone 5 to me is a much more evolutionary product than the iP 4Gs for the following reasons :

        1) 4G LTE is the future (not ready for prime timedue to low # of processors)
        2) China Mobile wants it , and they are the biggest carrier in the world
        3) It will have a quad processor (A6) with a graphic processor 10 times faster than the A5

I am not sure if the A6 is “essential” for an iPhone, but it will be GREAT for the iPad making it more PRODUCTIVE as it will increase the artificial intelligence use … The promising part of the A6 to an iPhone would be its 32/29/23 nm which would reduce the power consumption much needed for the TRUE 4G …But then again, is increased transmission speed needed for an iPhone ? Not so sure about that ! … But DEFINITELY so for the iPad 3 !

The notion that that the 4Gs is merely evolutionary stems from the fact that the A5 became available in March 2011 … That is 7 months ago …

But what people may be missing is there might have been some problems to make it fit in an iPhone enclosure… My suspicions about that have increased since the iPodT (slimmer than the iP4′s) did not get refreshed by an A5 …

What disappointed me is that Cook did not explain why Apple “delayed” the 4 Gs from the usual June … I know that AAPL wanted to coincide its release with the availability of iOS 5 and iCloud , but was that really necessary ? Could they not have released it with a iOs 4 and later made provision to upgrade it to iOS 5 (Like they have been doing since 2007?)

You’re probably right, but that is an anal rententive decision. What should matter is sales which is going to be affected, how much nobody will ever know. Of course sales affects AAPL which is being and will continue to be hammered. That should piss you off too!

Conjure on this. In a poll 27% of Android users said they’d switch to an iPhone 5 while 11% said they’d switch to an iPhone 4S. Of course, they had no idea what these models were, but apparently a name is sort of important.

      Nope.
Anyone who sees it will want it.
      Anyone who has a 4 will want a 4S.
The exclusivity of Siri to the 4S in itself will make it a huge seller.
As a stockholder, I love it when the stock takes a dip. I can get more shares cheaper and I know they’ll appreciate!

        JPW ,

I beg to differ with you :
        1) Surveys do not support your belief
        2) Why incur a penalty to break a contract ?
        3) Why not wait another 5 months or less to avoid the penalty and get the REAL DEAL (iP5)

However, I believe that iPhone sales will shoot up in FQ04-11 :
        A) Christmas
        B) Continued erosion Of RIMM, NOK, MSFT market share
        C) Android’s popularity will take a hit :

        - Loss of patent wars
        - Not free anymore so more expensive
        - The shortcomings of Android : Ban threats, Security, Balkanisation, fear of continued support from GOOG following its acquisition of MOT

I have not tried it because it’s not out there yet, but I can tell you right away I never cared much talking to machines. I mean when I call somewhere for customer support and automated voice asks me to TELL it my choice, I rather push buttons or even hang up. I just don’t like to talk to machines. I am either not ready for this age or they got it wrong if they think that feature is such a big deal. All the talking to software I ever downloaded and tested I used about two times. Well, let’s wait till tomorrow and see whether they can change my mind.

Traderhood Chatroom is back. It’s extremely fast and scalable chat based on node and socket.io. It’s still in the beta so feel free to abuse it and report any bugs you can find. It still needs daylog as we used to have in old chat and few other bells and whistles but core is done. Hope you’ll find it useful.

Above the boards (but below the Traderhood banner) there will be one radioactive Hulk green line of text, with a + button on the right. Clicking on that will open the chat board.

thanks for comments (here and in chatroom). btw. it relies heavily on html5 and css3 so some very old browsers may have some issues displaying things.

The whole idea was to have it there unobtrusive when one doesn’t want it, but accessible when one does. It updates in real time whether it’s closed or open. So one can still see latest chat posts even in collapsed state.

may I suggest the possibility to comment (chat) without expanding the chat window ? (when you see that the last message did not change for a while)

Agree, but no mention of lack of camera, gps, bluetooth, and little memory. It’s really a loss leader for sales of other merchandize.

Available from the get go, it seems. It is still not the AWD I was predicting, it seems “only” an enhanced PEM and motor version of the 300 miles version. If my TSLA options play as I want, I would probably take that one as a stopgap solution (and take a loss in selling it 1-2 years later, that’s in the case my wife does not start driving again – she hates the way people drive in Paris).

Long live the short squeeze !
